About Trowel and Fork

Trowel and fork: Becky

“There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments”

Wearing my mums orange overalls my granddad set me to work separating the delicate flower seedlings and potting them into bigger individual pots. I don’t remember how old I was then but it’s the first memory I have in the garden. Ever since I’ve been hooked.

I am a 20-something year old, who loves learning to grow fresh fruit and vegetables. I take great inspiration from my grandparents and the way the garden and seasons fit their life. I currently work a 9-5 corporate job and am in my final year in university so my garden is my great escape!

Trowel and Fork: The plot

I am a backyard gardener and until recently my garden consisted of a small raised bed in my parents garden. In April 2016 me and my partner brought our first house and with it came a small garden. Luckily for me he’s as into the plot to plant fantasy as I am. So far we’ve built three raised beds along the fence and made room for a green house with a lot more ideas to utilise our space.

Trowel and Fork: Purpose

I’ve found that gardening also incorporate my other interests such as planning, organisation and saving money. Once I realised this I decided to turn my hobbies into a lifestyle of partial self sufficiency.

I want to share our journey towards our goal of partial self sufficiency and track our progress so I started Trowel and Fork. I’ll document the successes and failures, provide tips and advice and take the plot right through to plate. Hopefully this blog will help others to realise the beauty of grow your own and contribute to the vibrant online growing community.

“The greatest thing in the world is to know how to be self sufficient”
